Additional Ingredients and Replacements
- Swap another pasta variety- You can exchange orzo for farfalle pasta or even capellini if desired. They all end up tasting delicious.
- Include vegetables- Prepare this recipe with some kale, diced tomatoes, shallots, leeks, squash, or Portobello mushrooms.
- Prepare it with meat- Ground turkey, lamb, duck breast, or prawns would be a tasty addition to this Rich Orzo.
- Supplement with cream cheese- Enhance this dish with extra creaminess and thickness by adding cream cheese.
Preparing Rich Orzo
- Make the creamy cheese sauce. Warm up the whipping cream in a saucepan. Incorporate the minced garlic and the grated Parmesan cheese.

- Cook the pasta. Boil and strain the orzo pasta.
- Mix. Incorporate the hot creamy cheese into the pot of pasta and stir well to mix.
- Bake. Transfer the cheesy pasta mixture into a 9 x 13-inch baking dish and sprinkle grated mozzarella and Parmesan on it. Bake for 15 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit, or until the cheese turns golden brown.
Pro Hint: Grease the baking dish before adding the rich orzo so it doesn’t stick and burn. Cleaning will be much easier this way!

Recipe Pointers
- Incorporate Parmesan while the cream is hot- Wait for the cream to heat up before adding the Parmesan cheese to allow it to melt properly.
- Add salt to the pasta water- Salting the water in which the orzo is cooked will infuse more flavor than salting afterwards.
- Cook the orzo al dente- Ensure not to overcook the pasta as it will continue to cook in the oven when mixed with the cream and cheeses. Avoid it being overly soft.
- Broil it- In the final few minutes of cooking, broil the Rich Orzo. This will direct heat onto the cheese topping, creating a lovely golden brown crust.
Frequently Asked Questions
Orzo is essentially pasta shaped like rice grains. If you like the texture of pasta, you’ll love how this Rich Orzo turns out.
If you cook the orzo for too long, it will become mushy. Only cook it according to the package instructions for al dente pasta so that it doesn’t become mushy when finishing in the oven.
