    Details of the Recipe

I adore this Fresh Salsa Fresca recipe for its freshness and intense flavors. generally, raw onions are not my favorite, but this salsa recipe is an exception.

    • FLAVOR: This Fresh Salsa Fresca offers sweetness, saltiness, tanginess, and spiciness. The jalapeños, lime juice, fresh coriander, and tomatoes provide a wonderful range of tastes.
    • CONSISTENCY: It consists of large diced vegetables that have softened after soaking in lime juice. Each bite explodes with deliciousness on your palate.
    • TIME: This recipe will require about 25 minutes to prepare.
    • SIMPLICITY: It is an effortless no-cooking recipe that you’ll enjoy making all through the summer.

    Essential Ingredients

    Notes on Ingredients

    • Tomatoes- Any type of tomato can be used, but Roma and vine tomatoes are ideal for this dish due to their excellent flavor and texture. Avoid overly mushy tomatoes.
    • Onions- White, yellow, or red onions work well. They provide a lot of flavor and a satisfying crunch. Refrigerate them to make dicing easier and reduce tears.
    • Jalapenos- Seeds are removed to prevent excessive spiciness in this salsa recipe. Pickled jalapenos from a jar can also be used if fresh ones are unavailable.
    • Coriander- This fresh herb imparts the distinctive flavor associated with a good salsa fresca. It has a fresh, citrusy, and unique taste.
    • Limes- Lime juice adds a delightful tangy flavor. Freshly squeezed lime juice offers superior flavor compared to concentrate, but either option works.

    Additional Options and Replacements

    • Include spices- Explore this recipe by incorporating additional spices like cayenne pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, or black pepper.
    • Adjust the spiciness- Increase or decrease the heat level by adding more jalapenos, omitting them entirely, or retaining the seeds.
    • Use lemon instead of lime- Lemon juice can serve as a substitute for lime juice in salsa fresca when lime is unavailable.
    • Incorporate other vegetables and fruits- Diced cucumbers, bell peppers, avocado, and mango can also be added to this salsa fresca.

    Making Fresh Salsa Fresca

    • Chop and soak the onions. Dice the onions manually or with a vegetable cutter, then soak them in cold water for approximately 20 minutes to lessen their pungency. Afterwards, drain them.
    • Chop the remaining vegetables. Remove the cores of the tomatoes, and then chop them. Dice the jalapenos and coriander, ensuring to wash your hands afterwards (or use gloves).
    • Combine all ingredients. In a large bowl, add the tomatoes, onions, coriander, and jalapenos, and mix. Add the lime juice and salt. Adjust the quantity of jalapenos or salt to suit your taste.
    • Present. This homemade salsa fresca is superb on Loaded Chicken Nachos paired with a chunky guacamole.

Pro Tip: Chilling the onions prevents their tear-inducing enzymes from dispersing into the air and causing tears. Ten minutes in the freezer should suffice.

Steps to prepare Fresh Salsa Fresca: soak the diced onions and drain them, then chop the coriander, jalapenos, and tomatoes, combining everything in a bowl.

    Tips for the Recipe

    • Opt for organic or homegrown tomatoes- These tomatoes are considerably more flavorful. At times, they can be overly sweet, necessitating the addition of extra salt to balance the flavor in your recipe.
    • Soak onion in water- Raw onions possess a strong flavor that can overpower other ingredients. Soaking the onions mitigates the intensity, allowing them to blend harmoniously.
    • Do not omit the lime juice- Lime juice imparts a vibrant and acidic note to salsa fresca that you won’t want to exclude.
    • Wear gloves when handling the jalapeno- Jalapenos contain oils that can cause irritation. Using gloves prevents these oils from coming into contact with your skin and inadvertently touching your eyes or face.

    Frequent Questions

How is salsa different from salsa fresca?

Salsa and salsa fresca share similar ingredients but vary in texture. Salsa fresca is chunkier and thicker than regular salsa. Each ingredient in it is distinct, whereas salsa often has a smoother consistency and uniform color.

What is the literal meaning of salsa fresca?

Salsa fresca directly translates to “fresh sauce” in Spanish. It is a vibrant and flavorful condiment traditionally made with fresh ingredients like tomatoes, onions, coriander, and jalapenos.

    Is it piquant?

It all depends. While it does contain jalapenos, the level of spiciness relies on how you handle them. You can reduce a significant amount of the pungency from these peppers by eliminating the seeds. For added zest, you can also incorporate hot sauce or cayenne pepper to your homemade pico de gallo.

Given the versatility of this Pico de Gallo recipe, you can easily complement it with any meal throughout the day. Indulge in it with your preferred dishes, crisps, morning recipes, and more!

    • Mexican cuisine: Enhance your favorite Mexican-inspired dishes with this pico. Experiment it with these Crunchy Fish Tacos, White Sauce Enchiladas, Shrimp Fajitas, or Red Sauce Enchiladas.
    • Greens: Combine your Pico de Gallo in a Taco Salad (VIDEO), Avocado Corn Salad, or Tuna Pasta Salad.
    • Starters: Serve it alongside Chicken Quesadillas, Guacamole, Loaded Chicken Nachos, Seven Layer Taco Dip, or Jalapeno Artichoke Dip.
    • Early meal: Dollop some onto your Crispy Breakfast Burritos (VIDEO), Croissant Breakfast Sandwich, Easy Poached Eggs with Caramelized Onions, or Quiche Lorraine.

    Prepare This Dish in Advance

Prep ahead: You can prepare this dish a day earlier and allow it to rest in the refrigerator, covered, until you’re prepared to serve. However, you may need to strain some of the liquid as the tomatoes will release moisture due to the mixed-in salt.

Preservation: Homemade Pico de Gallo can last for about a week in a sealed container in the fridge. The blend of flavors improves as they meld together, providing delightful taste for days.

Freezing: I advise against freezing this dish as the tomatoes do not thaw well. It’s preferable to only make what you can enjoy within a week.

    Constituents

    • 1 shallot chopped
    • 7 red tomatoes
    • 2 spicy peppers finely chopped and deseeded
    • 1 glass coriander chopped
    • 1 1/2 tsp salt
    • 2 tsp fresh lemon juice

    Steps

    • Cut the shallot and immerse in cold water for approximately 20 minutes. This will diminish the intense shallot flavor.
